This weekend was one of the most surreal experiences of my life and one of the best kiting moments ever which I will never forget. Originally was meant to be going down to help with the Crossing on the Ribs but after the failed attempt on Saturday we had the Chance to do the crossing on the Sunday.
As the wind direction had switched round we had to go from England and land in France. This gave a slight problem as the French had said we would not be allowed to land, really?? We took the risk and went for it anyway!
On the beach I helped get Richard on the right size but testing the wind as it was slightly gusty. We choose the 8.5 Ion and got him on his way!
Shortly after I went out on the 8.5 Ion, Followed by Ryan Austin, Dave Ursell and Andrew Kruszynski and we made our way across the channel.
Mid way the energy levels were shot so Dave luckily had some chocolate bars to help us to keep going.
As we started to approach the beach we got more & more excited, we had almost made it!!
On the beach there were several locals there to greet us but there was one local we did not want to see! The French MARINES! Their helicopter came in over headland and did a low swoop, we really thought we were in for it at that point. Luckily they just waved and went on their way. We joked saying “haha police will probably be in car park”.
Lo and behold they were! b***cks!! As the boats had left as of the Marines & us not being able to get back to them we were then stuck. The police tried everything they could to not allow us in but being 6pm on a Sunday they could not get through to anyone and let us off.
So we were now in France with no clothes, no way home but luckily Anthony from Flexifoil’s aunt lived in the town and allowed us to relax at their home & shower. Wim Kite the local shop went and opened up for us and returned with clothes for us all! We have never been so happy to get out of wetsuits!
This still left us with a problem, we were not able to get a helicopter to come and pick us up! only a couple of people in England had passports to drive over, luckily my Dad & Girlfriend Sarah did, so they had to drive over and meet us! When they walked in we were so relieved!
So we loaded the cars up and headed for the tunnel! We ended up missing the last train so had to wait 3 hours on Calais which was not fun!
On the train back we all chilled arriving back at the hotel at around 3am! I finally arrived back home at 7.30am! I was so glad to see my bed!
What a weekend and can’t wait for next adventure!
