Redcar BKSA - 20.10.09

This was the penultimate round of the first BKSA Kiteival power kiting freestyle series for 2009. Having missed the first event due to injury and not being on full form at the second round I was not expecting to place high overall this year.

Myself & Lewis headed up leaving home around 3.30am on the Thursday morning, we only had to be there Thursday as I had the Van and this contained the demo gear needed for the event so it meant we had quite an easy day. The journey up was quite easy and we arrived in middlesborugh around 7amish, we were desperate for food so drove around for an hour looking for a café, supermarket with café to no joy so we headed down to Redcar to find a morrisons with café! Typical! After a fry up we headed down to the beach.

Arriving at the beach we saw some weary eyed people who looked like they had not slept well the night before!  After dropping of the demo gear we chilled out for abit. Having had a cold & chest infection I was trying to take it easy, but as the wind built through the day the temptation was too great and I went for a session on the 8.5 Blade. The wind picked up nicely and the session soon became pretty dam powered! Hitting the spot perfectly. As I had been ill I became shattered pretty quickly so only managed a smallish session which i was guttered about.

That evening we headed back to the B&B showered, chilled for a bit then headed into town for some food at the local KFC. Having been up since 3.30 we had an early night and got some sleep.

Friday morning was the first day of the comp, and typically there was no wind! We waited around on the beach hoping it would come through but it didn’t. That evening we had the Redbull BBQ held in the skatepark next to the beach, and after a few drinks headed back to the B&B to get a decent night hoping the wind would come through the next morning to get the comp done!

Saturday the wind wasn’t there but there was hope it would come through. During the day it came through slightly and the first heats were held. I went through on the first heat, wind wasn’t ideal to say the least but as the wind disappeared we could not complete comp so it was a no result competition.

Saturday evening was prize giving, we all dressed up smart, yes ties the lot! And had a meal to celebrate the season. As I had missed the first round I came 4th overall so was a little bit disappointed but hey ho! Always next year! After the prize giving we all moved onto the pub down the road for several drinks. Some of us headed back after the pub while some moved onto the club, my throat and chest were killing me so I had to lightweight out!

Sunday was recovery day and also as there was some wind a best trick comp. I tried to go for it but Dave landed a 720 kiteloop which was rather large so walked away with it, totally deserved! Early afternoon we loaded van up and made the journey home! We got back around 8pm which is the earliest been back from a kite event for long while!

Massive Thanks to BKSA for putting on the comps and cant wait for the 2010 season!
